The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like standard biological terror, but inside Together lies a profound contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). The director weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He fears the notion of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that come with any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
